Plans to tackle a congestion hotspot in Newcastle have been released

The section of Kingston Park Road which lies west to the A1 is set to benefit from a road-widening scheme to ease congestion on the approach to the busy A1 roundabout.

With major housing developments planned in the area, the council have identified problem junctions that need investment to improve efficiency and journey time reliability.

Kingston Park Road currently suffers from high levels of congestion at peak times which causes issues for cars leaving the Greenside estate and people use nearby residential areas as a cut through to avoid the main roads. The council plan to widen the road to reduce congestion and smooth traffic flow.

At the same time, they will also install road safety measures and improve walking and cycling facilities along Fawdon Walk to help local people access the area better. They are also working with Highways England on proposals to widen the A1 to three lanes from junctions 78-79 and improve the signings and approaches to the A1 roundabout.

The council have planned these junction improvements to tie-in with the new Spine Road to be built on the Newcastle Great Park.
