Newcastle celebrates school achievement awards

The annual Newcastle Student Achievement Awards will be held this week to celebrate the achievements of 53 children and young people from Newcastle.

Children from across the city are celebrated for both their personal and academic achievements including successes in sports and organising fundraising events.

Nominated students come from a range of Newcastle schools including Walbottle Campus, Atkinson Road Primary School and Walkergate Community School.

Reasons for nominations include overcoming challenges such as language barriers and learning difficulties and for completing excellent academic work including achieving high grades and showing great improvement.

Lauren Head, a student from Walbottle Campus, is being awarded for her dedication to extracurricular opportunities including leading on the M-Card project that aimed to end period poverty in Newcastle and Barnardo’s Young Carers projects. As a young carer herself she understands the challenges faced by many young people.

As a house captain and school councillor at Westerhope Primary School, Ben Heslop has overcome his dyslexia and helped to produce a pamphlet on the condition for the school’s teachers. He will receive an award for his involvement in every aspect of school life.
